My boy’s school does houses-think Harry Potter type. In third grade, each child goes up to the hat, selects a pin, and is placed in a house. When my middle skittle was in third grade, I watched, tears streaming down my face as he ran up to his two best friends since first grade. They were all in the same house because the hat knows!
My youngest is now in third grade. My baby. My last one to be placed in a house. My sweet autistic baby. I had no idea how this would go. Now, I must pause here and shout out the school. They place all the third grade in the cafeteria; the kids know what they are doing and are excited beyond belief. The ESE kids go first and that room full of excited 8-year-olds goes quiet and they don’t cheer as their peers pick their houses. They wave their arms in the air and wiggle but remain as quiet as they can. It is magical to witness. (I’m crying as I write this because my mama heart just can’t)
Okay, so my baby got a house this year. I thought I had paid and bribed the teachers for him to get his favorite color but the hat knows- and my Davis was placed in the yellow house. Sollevare is the house of uplifting, loyalty, and persistence. And I knew I had to do something to celebrate this! What better way than GLITTER PHOTOS? Paint photos? Color powder photos?
I wanted to find a way to freeze this moment in childhood. My oldest turned 15 and got her permit, my middle is now in 5th grade and it is all moving so darn fast. I want a pause button.
I love renting dresses. I probably should stage an intervention but seeing the girl's faces when they see the dress, then seeing them transform as they wear the dress is so magical. Seeing the moms as they realize their babies aren’t babies anymore and knowing that feeling all too well is addicting.
So, I spent six weeks doing glitter sessions. One dress for each house. Oh and in between two or three hurricanes. My studio is filled with confetti and glitter and I love it. I love all things glittery and sparkle-y. To me, people are like glitter. Their unique sparkling qualities shine and shimmer and make them beautiful.
